The Very Bad
Santa Crawl
December 16, 2006

You’d better not pout, you’d better not shout, but you might want to run and hide. You certainly want to lock up your daughters, because the very bad Santas are coming to town.

Join us for our first Very Bad Santa Bar Crawl and let’s get the holiday season really started. You can come in a Santa suit. You can come as an elf. You can come in your red lingerie. But you do need to come!

Here’s the battle plan:

4:00 Meet at Lewis' - 2480 Burgundy (corner of St. Roch)
5:00 Washington Square on Frenchman
7:00 7 on Fulton - Riverfront Hotel - 701 Convention Blvd
7:30 Gordon Biersch - On Poydras across from Harrah’s
8:15 Carousel Bar - The Monteleone Hotel on Royal
8:45 Crescent City Brewhouse on Decatur
9:15 Tujaques on Decatur
9:45 Molly's on Decatur
10:15 Frenchman Street
11:00 Mimi's back in the Marigny

You don’t have to get a drink at each stop. We encourage you to pace yourself and have a good time. You are welcome to catch up with the crawl any where along the way. We don't expect to keep this on schedule but the bartender at any location will know if we've been there or not. We also encourage you to bring X rated gifts, to only wear underwear if it’s red, and to practice your naughty carols. Bystanders are not innocent, no matter what they try to get you to believe.

Ho! Ho? Who you callin’ a Ho?

Santas saving New Orleans, one drink at a time! Please remember: Don’t screw with the cops. Don’t screw with the kids. And if asked who is in charge, tell ‘em Santa is.

Don't know how many of you have ever heard of JD Hill. He has been playing in and around New Orleans for over 20 years, adding his harmonica and vocal talents to an endless list of well known talent. He has played with Deacon John for almost as long. JD was one of the the first musicians to find a home in the Musicians Village, and has the dubious distinction of having the President and Laura Bush dancing to his live music in his living room (he has pictures to prove it).

JD was beaten to the ground by three young punks shortly after Katrina. After he was down they kicked him in the head, doing severe damage that almost killed him. If i'm not mistaken they got $13. After several surgeries and a lot of work on his part, JD with his back up group, The Jammers, is back to playing music, and the music is great.

Friends told me about them and i managed to catch him last Saturday night at the St Roch Tavern. He was terrific - down home blues at it's best. Here is a guy who just played to a packed crowd on the Gentilly Stage at Jazz Fest (Rolling Stone referred to him as one of the highlihgts of JF) and almost nobody knows that he is now playing Saturday night at this great little bar just off of St Claude. So, now you know. Don't keep it a secret. Tell your friends, and maybe we will see you there one of these Saturday nights.

New Orleans is far more than jazz and gumbo – it's one of the most creative and vibrant cities in the world. Perhaps what divides New Orleans musicians, artists and freaks from their counterparts in New York, LA and San Francisco is press coverage and often, a lack of ambition. People in New Orleans are concerned with living a pleasurable life and making art for the joy of creation rather than for fame and success. There is a secret history, which The New Orleans Index Project now documents.

Lesbians On Ecstasy (aka Lezzies On X) hail from Montreal, and make "electronic music of the lesbian variety." A quartet comprised of Bernie Bankrupt on keys/sampler, Veronique Mystique on bass, Jackie "The Jackhammer" on drums, and Fruity Frankie (aka Lynne T) on vocals, they're known for their humorous techno and electro-punk covers of lesbian classics -- i.e. kd lang, Tracy Chapman, Indigo Girls and Melissa Etheridge -- from their self-titled debut album. The band has opened for Le Tigre and Chicks On Speed, and has been remixed by Tracy & the Plastics, Katastrophe, Scream Club and more on their latest release, Giggles In The Dark. "Funnier than Peaches and more danceable than Le Tigre," says lesbian culture website Afterellen.com - LOE's self-proclaimed mission is to bring lesbian dance music into the 21st century. http://www.lezziesonx.com

From Olympia, Washington, Scream Club is Cindy Wonderful and Sarah Adorable,"two freaky white rapper chicks" who describe their sounds as "electro sex hip pop punk rock rap." On their debut album Don't Bite Your Sister, the out-queer duo worked with Beth Ditto (The Gossip), Rachel Carns (King Cobra, The Need), Mirah and Tara Jane O'Neill, amongst many others in the Pacific Northwest underground scene, and have been busy developing a new underground label with Nicky Click and others, Crunks Not Dead. A fluke of luck has their "Debauchery Now" national tour with Nicky Click hooking up with LOE's tour date in New Orleans - we can't believe our good fortune to have them all on the same bill. Visit their myspace page at: http://www.myspace.com/screamclub, or their website: http://www.screamclub.com.

Nicky Click is a queer femme solo electronic music and performance artist from Olympia, Washington whose debut album You're Already A Member will be released on Crunk's Not Dead in May 2006. She recently opened for UK grime-rap sensation Lady Sovereign, and performed at Seattle's "Queering Femininity" conference and Ladyfest last year. She's often compared to other underground electro-punk artists who merge their politics/activism with their art, like Le Tigre and Gravy Train, and has been called the queer Gwen Stefani (though we think she has more in common with Peaches). More info on her website, http://www.nickyclick.com.

We'll be there about a week (although we could move around if we need to), and are pretty low-maintenance. (I know most volunteers are camping, but I've got back problems and I think sleeping on the ground and working my ass off would be too much.)

I've posted this elsewhere, but figured it would be appropriate to post here, too...this took place in Kenner:

So I went out to lunch today.

At a strip mall.

As I'm preparing to leave the mall, a woman standing behind my car yells, "So, what, you hate America?!" At first I didn't think this was directed at me. I turn to look and yep, I'm the one she is questioning.

I reply, "Excuse me?"

She repeats, "You hate America?!" This time she points to the John Kerry sticker attached to the rear window. I also have a few other bumper stickers, including one for "Eracism" and "New Orleans Proud to Call it Home," but those don't upset her, I guess.

She tells me that her husband is a Vietnam Veteran.

I reply, "My Dad is a Veteran, too. I guess we're even, then. You have a good day."

I climb into my car and hear her yell, "Fuck you, Muhammad!"

I wear a kufi, not because I'm Muslim, I just like the way kufis look. But I reckon that leads her to believe I follow Islam.

I reply, "Your mama." And drive away.

Mental note: never get lunch at a strip mall, again.

I am not necessarily proud of my response, but I did find this whole ordeal funny and thought it was worth sharing.

Thank you.

My weekend's highlight...sort of...

On Saturday night, just before dinner, I leave my house to hit up Robérts and pick up a few items. I live near the train tracks (I know, we all do) and a train blocked my path making a five minute trip turn to twenty minutes. No big deal, really, I'm used to it.

At Robérts, I get the few items (beer, water and cheese if you're wondering...probably not) and get in a rather short line to make my purchase. A longer line is to the left of me. I found it odd that nobody was in the line I chose, but whatever...

I soon found out why.

The woman ahead of me easily had over $200 worth of groceries, but only about $15 on her to pay. The cashier tried to explain to her that she didn't have enough money to buy all of these items. The woman, in turn, had a major attitude about the insufficient funds and yelled at the cashier to take such-and-such item off the total, then, and then do a retotal. The cashier would subtract a milk, then a cereal box of some crap, some beer, then retotal. Still way too much.

The woman was on something. I suspected crack. It's always crack.

All I wanted to do was buy my three stinking items, so in turn I was annoyed. Plus I was hungry, so I just wasn't in a very good mood. Perhaps the train annoyed me more than I thought. Maybe the lighting and crappy music with subliminal messages playing throughout the store was giving me a headache. I don't know.

I get in the other, longer line. What should have been, maybe, five minutes turned into fifteen. I pay, I leave. I'm in a bad mood.

As I'm exiting the store I notice two derelicts waiting just outside. One of them says to me, "Hey white boy, give me a dollar!"

I reply, "Man, fuck you!" and continue walking. Not the best response, I know, but c'mon, "white boy"?

He then says, "Oh, that's your ass, cracker!" I turn back to see him reaching into his pocket for...

And everything goes in slow motion for me. I think, dang, I'm about to either get shot or stabbed and that'll be it. I get to be the next news item and statistic. And all I wanted was some beer, cheese and water.

...his hand comes out, empty. He makes his hand into the shape of a gun, thumb's the hammer. Click, click. He laughs. The other derelict says, "Stop fucking with that boy."

I exhale, "You think that shit's funny?" I walk away not waiting for a response.

Ah, Robérts Fresh Market.
